Snapchat Won't Delete Your Memories — What Happens Instead
Snapchat has now said, in writing, that it will not delete your Memories because you don't pay. What happens instead: starting in January 2027, Memories that are more than one year old — and that fall outside your oldest 5GB — will be archived. Archived Memories stay stored on Snapchat and show up in the app as thumbnails, but you can't open, edit, or share them unless you upgrade your storage, or download them and keep them outside the app.
That's the whole story, sourced below. No countdown, no deletion date, because there isn't one.
What Snapchat actually says
These sentences come from Snapchat's official Memories storage FAQ on help.snapchat.com (article 41291271694228). We first saw the new wording on September 16, 2026 and re-read the page on September 25. They are quoted word for word.
On the question everyone has been asking — will Snapchat delete Memories if you don't upgrade:
No. Snapchat will not automatically delete your Memories because you do not upgrade.
On what happens instead, and when:
Starting in January 2027, Memories that are more than one year old and are not part of your oldest 5GB of Memories will be archived and remain stored on Snapchat. You will continue to have access to Memories saved within the last year, as well as your oldest 5GB of Memories.
And on the timing, stated without ambiguity:
No Memories will be archived before January 2027, and we will provide advance notice in the app before anything changes for you.
On what archived means, the same FAQ says archived Memories "will appear as thumbnails in the app, but you will need to upgrade your storage to open, edit, or share them," and that you "will have the options of subscribing or downloading your Memories to access them outside the app."
That is the complete official position as of today. If Snapchat changes any of it, we'll update this page and say so, with a date.
What happened to the "12 months of temporary storage"?
This is the sentence that explains the whole past year. When Snap announced storage plans on September 26, 2025, it promised "12 months of temporary Memories storage" for anything over 5GB — and never said what would happen once those twelve months ran out. Every countdown you saw, including the late September–October 2026 window most honest coverage (ours included) deduced from it, filled that gap with the worst case: deletion.
The FAQ now closes the gap in Snap's own words: "When we announced Memories Storage Plans, we committed to giving affected Snapchatters 12 months of temporary storage before any changes took effect." The change that follows those twelve months is archiving, from January 2027 — not deletion, and not in September or October 2026.
What "archived" means in practice
Archived is not deleted, but it's not full access either. Here is what the FAQ describes:
- Your Memories stay stored, and visible as thumbnails. Nothing disappears from the Memories tab. You'll see small previews of archived snaps and videos.
- You can't open, edit, or share an archived Memory inside the app without upgrading your storage.
- Two ways to regain full access. Either subscribe to a storage plan — a 100GB Memories-only plan ($1.99/month or $20/year in the US), Snapchat+ (typically 250GB) or Snapchat+ Platinum (5TB) — or download your Memories and keep them outside the app. Snapchat's own My Data export, the official download route, costs nothing.
- You'll be warned first. Snapchat says it will give advance notice in the app before anything changes for your account.
- Family plans are covered. On Snapchat+ Family plans, each member gets the storage benefit — it isn't limited to the account holder.
Two details matter more than they look. First, the one-year threshold: only Memories older than one year are eligible for archiving, so recent snaps aren't affected. Second, the 5GB rule protects your oldest Memories — your earliest 5GB stays fully accessible for free, whatever happens. If your whole library fits under 5GB, archiving doesn't touch you at all.
So all those deletion countdowns were wrong?
Yes. For roughly a year, sites and viral posts claimed Snapchat would permanently delete Memories on specific dates — several versions of a September 2026 deadline circulated widely. None of those dates ever appeared in any official Snapchat source, and the FAQ now confirms the core claim was false: there is no deletion, and there never was a deletion date. We covered the rumor cycle as it happened in our deadline tracker and the September 21 rumor breakdown.
About that September 21 date: it was real, but it was only the day Snapchat's new Terms of Service took effect. We compared the new terms with the previous version — the Memories section is word-for-word identical. The new Terms changed nothing about Memories, as we documented in our line-by-line comparison. September 21 came and went, and nothing happened to anyone's Memories.
Still Mine's tracker never published a deletion date, because no official source ever contained one. This is exactly why we track every claim with its source and its date: when the internet fills with countdowns, the boring, verifiable answer — "Snapchat has not announced this" — is the one that turns out to be true.
What you should actually do before January 2027
There is no emergency here. There is a decision, and you have months to make it calmly.
- Check how much Memories storage you're using. In Snapchat, tap the gear icon in My Account to open Settings, scroll to My App, tap Memories and look under Cloud Storage. If you're under 5GB, archiving won't affect you and you can stop reading.
- If you're over 5GB, decide: subscribe or download. A storage plan keeps everything accessible in-app for a recurring fee. Downloading gets your photos and videos out of Snapchat entirely, once — Snapchat's own FAQ names it as the alternative to upgrading, and its export is free.
- If you choose to download, do it properly. Grabbing thousands of snaps one at a time is miserable; there are better routes, including Snapchat's own export. Our step-by-step download guide walks through every method, and this article covers the common pitfalls.
Full disclosure: Still Mine is our own app, for iPhone and Android. It opens your Snapchat export on your phone and lets you view all your Memories for free; saving them all to your gallery, with their original dates, costs a one-time €4.99 per archive — never a subscription. Nothing is uploaded. If the point of downloading is to stop paying monthly for your own photos, we didn't think the exit door should charge rent either.
The timeline so far
A short, dated recap — the full version lives in our policy timeline:
- September 26, 2025 — Snapchat announces on its newsroom that free Memories storage will be capped at 5GB, with paid plans above that and "12 months of temporary Memories storage" for anything over the cap. The internet quickly labels it a "memory tax."
- October 2025 – September 2026 — Rumors and countdown sites claim various deletion deadlines, none of them from Snapchat. Our tracker logs each claim against the official sources; no deletion date ever appears in one.
- By September 16, 2026 — Snapchat's official FAQ states plainly that Memories will not be deleted for non-payment, and that archiving starts in January 2027, not before.
- September 21, 2026 — New Terms of Service take effect. The Memories section is unchanged from the previous version, and nothing happens to Memories.
- January 2027 — Archiving begins for Memories older than one year that aren't part of the account's oldest 5GB, with advance in-app notice first.
FAQ
Will Snapchat delete my Memories if I don't pay?
No. Snapchat's official FAQ states verbatim: "No. Snapchat will not automatically delete your Memories because you do not upgrade." The change coming in January 2027 is archiving, not deletion — affected Memories stay stored and visible as thumbnails, but opening, editing or sharing them requires a storage upgrade, and you can still download them to keep outside Snapchat.
What happens in January 2027?
Starting in January 2027, Memories that are more than one year old and are not part of your oldest 5GB will be archived. They remain stored and visible as thumbnails, but opening, editing, or sharing them requires a storage upgrade. Snapchat has confirmed no Memories will be archived before January 2027, with advance notice in the app.
Which Memories get archived?
Only Memories that meet both conditions: they are more than one year old, and they fall outside your oldest 5GB of Memories. Recent snaps are unaffected, and your earliest 5GB stays fully accessible for free. If your entire library is under 5GB, archiving will not affect your account at all.
Can I still download archived Memories?
Yes. Snapchat's FAQ gives you the option of "subscribing or downloading your Memories to access them outside the app." Snapchat's My Data export, the official way to download, is free. That means you never lose your photos and videos — the paid plan only affects whether you can open them inside Snapchat.
Was September 21, 2026 the deletion date?
No. September 21, 2026 was only the date Snapchat's new Terms of Service took effect, and the Memories section of those terms is word-for-word identical to the previous version. Nothing happened to Memories that day, and no official Snapchat source has ever published a deletion date for Memories.
Do Snapchat+ family plan members get storage too?
Yes. According to Snapchat's FAQ, on Family plans each member on the plan gets the storage benefit, not just the person paying for it. If your household already has a family subscription, check whether it covers everyone's storage before paying for anything separately or rushing to download.
Full disclosure: Still Mine is our own app. This page is part of our Memories policy tracker; we update it when the facts change, with dates.
