Snapchat Deleted My Memories — Can I Get Them Back?

The honest answer, before anything else: sometimes, partially, and only through Snapchat itself. If you're afraid Snap's storage policy took them: it didn't. Snap says in writing that it doesn't delete Memories because you don't pay, and it archives nothing before January 2027. For Memories that are genuinely gone, there is no guaranteed way to recover them — not through support, not through recovery software, not through anyone selling you hope. But "disappeared" and "permanently deleted" are not always the same thing, and there are a few real paths worth checking before you grieve. There's also everything that's still there, which is worth saving now.

Can I get my Snapchat Memories back?

Short answer: only Snapchat can restore anything, and only in some cases. Sorted by how likely each one is to work:

What will not work, whatever anyone sells you: recovery software (the files were on Snap's servers, never on your phone), third-party "Snapchat recovery" services, and paying to escalate a support ticket. Each of those is covered below, with the reasoning.

And the part nobody wants to hear on the day it happens: whatever is still in your account right now is the only copy you can still act on. Export it today — the section at the end of this article covers exactly how.

First: are your Memories actually deleted, or just not loading?

Before assuming the worst, rule out the boring explanations, because they're common:

• Force-close and reopen Snapchat, then check Memories again. Sync failures happen, especially on weak connections — Memories live on Snap's servers, and a loading hiccup can look exactly like a deletion.
• Check you're logged into the right account. If you've ever had two accounts, this is the moment to remember that.
• Check your storage status. Settings → Memories → Storage. If it shows you over 5 GB with content still listed, your Memories aren't deleted. From January 2027, some may be archived — still stored, visible as thumbnails. That's worth acting on, but it's a different, much better problem. (It's also what the pop-up you swiped away was warning you about.)

• Scroll further back. After the 2025 storage change, some users mistook reorganized or slow-loading sections for missing content.

Did Snapchat delete my Memories, or did I?

Worth settling before anything else, because the two cases have different answers.

If you think Snap deleted them because you were over the 5 GB free limit: it didn't, and since September 2026 that is official — Snapchat states in writing that it does not delete Memories because you don't pay. From January 2027, Memories over a year old that aren't among your oldest 5 GB get archived instead, still stored (what happens instead). If you deleted the Snap yourself, from inside the app, the answer is shorter and we would rather you hear it now: there is no trash folder, no undo and no grace period, and Snap's help centre says its servers erase a deleted Memory "as soon as possible". If you can't tell which happened — nothing was deliberately deleted, but content is missing — the storage check above is the fastest way to find out. An account under 5 GB with missing Memories is a sync or account problem, not a policy one.

Can Snapchat support restore deleted Memories?

Here is where honesty gets uncomfortable: once a Memory is actually deleted, Snap offers no guarantee of recovery. The storage policy isn't the cause: Snap's help centre says it doesn't delete Memories for non-payment, and the 12-month temporary storage (announced September 26, 2025 — full history in our Memory Tax timeline) leads to archiving from January 2027, not deletion. But Snap's own terms say Memories "might become unavailable for any number of reasons" and recommend keeping a separate copy.

That said, contacting support is still worth ten minutes of your life, for three reasons:

1. Support is the only channel that can investigate. If your Memories vanished from a bug, an account compromise, or an error on Snap's side, only Snap can look. Go through the in-app support (Settings → I Need Help) or help.snapchat.com, explain when the content disappeared, and ask explicitly what happened to it and whether any of it is archived rather than deleted.
2. You'll get an answer about why. Knowing whether this was a bug, an account issue or a deletion on your side changes everything about what's possible.
3. It costs nothing, unlike most of what gets recommended in panic-Googling.

What we won't tell you: that pleading, escalating, or paying anyone increases the odds Snap restores deleted content. There's no evidence it does.

Does the 48-hour resubscribe window help me?

Not any more. Snap's help page used to mention a 48-hour window to resubscribe after cancelling a storage plan; it no longer does. What it says now matters more: Snap doesn't delete Memories for non-payment. If you cancelled a storage plan (100 GB, Snapchat+, or Platinum), your Memories stay stored. From January 2027, those over a year old that aren't among your oldest 5 GB get archived, and upgrading again unlocks them. If your Memories matter to you, check they're intact and use the breathing room to export everything properly — this time with a local copy.

Either way, resubscribing can't bring back a Memory that was actually deleted.

Will recovery software get my Snapchat Memories back?

No, and it's worth understanding why, because this is where desperate people lose money.

Disk recovery tools (the ones that promise to undelete photos) work by scanning your device's local storage for file remnants that haven't been overwritten yet. But Snapchat Memories were never stored on your phone — that was the entire product. They lived on Snap's servers, and when Snap deletes them there, nothing on your phone changes, because nothing on your phone existed. Scanning your device for server-side deletions is like searching your house for a letter that burned in someone else's.

The narrow exceptions, so we're being complete:

• Snaps you manually saved to your camera roll are normal local photos. If you deleted those, your phone's Recently Deleted folder (30 days on iOS, similar on Android), or your Google Photos/iCloud backups, may genuinely hold them. Check there.
• An old phone backup (iCloud, Google, iTunes) made before you saved-to-Memories-only might contain camera roll copies you forgot about.

But apps and services claiming to "recover deleted Snapchat Memories from Snapchat's servers"? They can't. Nobody outside Snap can touch Snap's servers, and that's the one place your Memories were. Anything charging you for that promise is charging you for theater.

What about a partial loss — some Memories gone, some still there?

Snap's storage policy doesn't delete anything, so a partial loss has another cause — a sync gap, a second account, a bug. From January 2027, what you may see is different: archived Memories still listed as thumbnails, which you can't open, edit or share without upgrading. Note which way round it goes: your oldest 5 GB and everything from the last year stay fully accessible; what gets archived is the rest — over a year old and outside that oldest 5 GB. If that's you:

• Archived isn't deleted. A thumbnail means the Memory is still stored, and Snap names two ways back: subscribe, or download.
• If Memories are truly missing — not even a thumbnail — contact support as above, and save what remains.

Which brings us to the only part of this page with genuinely good news.

How do I save everything that's left — today?

The export is free and official, and it's the single reliable protection Snap's own terms point to:

1. Go to accounts.snapchat.com and log in.
2. Open My Data.
3. Select "Request Only Memories."
4. Submit. Snap emails you download links for a ZIP. It says it strives to deliver within 7 days, but large downloads can take longer.
