If You Delete a Snapchat Memory, Is It Gone Forever?

Short answer: yes. If you deleted a Snap from Memories yourself, Snapchat has no trash folder, no "recently deleted" view and no grace period. Snap's own help center says its servers are "designed to erase that Snap as soon as possible" and that "Snapchat Support cannot recover lost Memories." The only way to get it back is if a copy already exists somewhere outside Snapchat: your phone's photo library, an older My Data export, or a cloud backup.

That is the answer to the literal question — the one this page is here for. If you did not delete anything and Memories went missing on their own, that is a different problem with different causes, and it has its own article: Snapchat deleted my Memories — what happened and what you can still get back. Below: the deliberate-deletion case in full, a short version of the other one, and how to stop either from mattering again.

First, which situation are you in?

There are really three questions hiding inside "are my Memories gone forever," and they have three different answers.

You deleted a Memory (on purpose or by accident) and want it back.
Memories disappeared on their own and you did not touch anything.
Nothing is missing yet, and you want to make sure it stays that way.

Take the one that matches you.

Case 1: I deleted a Memory myself. Can I get it back?

Not from Snapchat. This is the part almost every "recovery" article online gets wrong or glosses over, so here it is plainly.

Deleting a Memory in Snapchat is a three-step gesture: swipe up to Memories, press and hold the Snap, tap Delete. There is no undo, no confirmation timer, and no bin to fish it out of later. The help center article "My Snapchat Memories are missing" says:

"Unfortunately, Snapchat Support cannot recover lost Memories. ... if you delete a Snap from your Memories, our servers are designed to erase that Snap as soon as possible, which is why we cannot recover your Memories for you."

The article "When does Snapchat delete Snaps and Chats?" repeats it: "If you delete a Snap from your Memories, Snapchat servers are designed to erase that Snap as soon as possible."

So contacting support will not help, and there is no hidden setting. What can help is that a Memory may exist in more than one place. Check these three, in this order.

1. Your phone's photo library

If you ever exported that Snap to your Camera Roll, or had "Save to Camera Roll" turned on, a copy lives on your phone independently of Snapchat. Search your Photos app by date.

If you also deleted it from your phone, you still have a window there, and this is the only "recently deleted" folder that exists in this story:

iPhone: Photos → Albums → Recently Deleted keeps items for 30 days.
Google Photos: the Trash keeps items for 60 days (backed-up photos) before permanent removal.

Note that this folder belongs to your phone, not to Snapchat. Several well-ranked recovery guides describe it as if it were a Snapchat feature — one of the biggest ones lists "Recover from the Recently Deleted Folder" as a Snapchat method. It is not one. That folder only contains Snaps you had saved to the phone at some point, and if you never turned on Save to Camera Roll, it is empty of Snaps entirely.

2. A My Data export you requested earlier

If you ever downloaded your Snapchat data (Settings → My Data), the export ZIP includes your Memories as they existed at that time. Look for it in your Downloads folder, your email, or wherever you unpacked it. An export made after the deletion will not contain the Snap — the export is a snapshot, not an archive of everything you ever had. (What's actually inside that ZIP, if you're about to open one.)

3. A cloud or computer backup

iCloud Photos, Google Photos backup, a laptop you synced photos to, a hard drive from an old phone. If the Snap was ever in your Camera Roll, one of these may hold it.

If it is in none of these three places, it is gone. We know that is not what you were hoping to read, and we would rather tell you now than send you around in circles.

What about "Snapchat recovery software"?

You will see paid desktop tools promising to recover deleted Snapchat Memories. Here is what they actually do: they scan your phone's storage for file fragments that have not been overwritten yet. They cannot reach Snapchat's servers, and they cannot bring back a Snap that was only ever stored in Memories and erased there. If the Snap was never on your phone, there is nothing for them to find. If it was on your phone and you already checked Recently Deleted, the results are hit-and-miss at best. We are not naming products, and we are not selling one. Just do not pay for a promise Snapchat itself says cannot be kept.

Case 2: You didn't delete anything — the short version

This one has its own article, because it deserves more room than a section: Snapchat deleted my Memories — what happened and what you can still get back covers what Snap may still have and what is realistically recoverable. The short version is that it is usually one of three things.

You are over the 5 GB free limit

Since September 2025, free Snapchat accounts get 5 GB of Memories storage. Snap's announcement said it would "provide 12 months of temporary Memories storage for any Memories that exceed the 5GB storage limit." That announcement was dated September 26, 2025, so the twelve months run out around the end of September 2026. Snap has not published an exact purge date, a notification process, or which Memories go first. If your Memories vanished recently and you were over the limit, this is the first thing to look at. To check where you stand: open Memories, tap the settings icon, and look for the storage indicator or a "Low Storage" banner. The help center says: "If you're over the 5GB limit, you'll need to trim your Memories or upgrade your storage."

You cancelled a paid storage plan

This is the one concrete number Snap has published. According to "How do I manage my Memories storage?", after cancelling a Snapchat+ or Memories storage plan, "you'll have 48 hours to resubscribe before over-limit Memories are affected." If you cancelled in the last two days and your library is over 5 GB, resubscribing is the only official lever you have. After the 48 hours, the over-limit Memories are subject to the same policy as everyone else's.

Sometimes Memories are not gone, they are just not loading. Before assuming the worst: make sure you are signed into the right account (many people have two), check your connection, update the app, and give it a few minutes on Wi-Fi. And no, September 21 is not the reason

If your Memories went missing in the weeks around September 21, 2026, that date is not the cause. It is when Snap's updated Terms of Service take effect, and the Terms set no deletion date at all — we read both versions side by side. The storage policy that can delete Memories is a separate document from September 2025. Here's the whole rumor, fact-checked.

Case 3: Nothing is missing yet. How do I keep it that way?

The honest lesson from Cases 1 and 2 is the same: Snapchat is the only copy for most people, and Snapchat is not a backup. Snap's own Terms say, about Memories, "we recommend keeping a separate copy of content you save to Memories."

The fix takes an evening, not a weekend:

Request your My Data export in Snapchat (Settings → My Data → include Memories). You will get an email with a download link; large libraries arrive in several ZIPs.
Store the ZIPs somewhere that is not your phone: a computer, an external drive, or a cloud folder.
Optionally, turn on "Save to Camera Roll" in Memories settings so future Snaps land on your phone automatically.

Does Snapchat have a recently deleted folder for Memories?

No. Snapchat has no trash, bin or recently deleted view for Memories, and no grace period after you tap Delete. The "Recently Deleted" folder you may have read about belongs to your phone's Photos app, and it only holds Snaps that were saved to your Camera Roll at some point.

Can Snapchat Support restore a Memory I deleted?

No. Snap's help center states that "Snapchat Support cannot recover lost Memories" because its servers are designed to erase deleted Memories as soon as possible. Contacting support will not bring a deleted Snap back. Your only options are copies stored outside Snapchat: your phone, an old export or a cloud backup.

How long does Snapchat keep a deleted Memory?

Officially, no set time at all. Snap says deleted Memories are erased from its servers "as soon as possible." Treat a deletion as immediate and permanent. This is different from the 5 GB policy, where over-limit Memories on free accounts got twelve months of temporary storage starting September 26, 2025.

Why did my Snapchat Memories disappear without me deleting them?

The usual causes are being over the 5 GB free limit, having cancelled a paid storage plan more than 48 hours ago, or a sign-in or sync problem that makes Memories look missing when they are not. Do Snapchat Memory recovery apps work?

Not for Snaps that only lived in Memories. Those tools scan your phone's local storage for leftover files; they cannot access Snapchat's servers. If a Snap was never saved to your phone, there is nothing for them to recover. If it was, check your Photos app's Recently Deleted folder first, for free.

What is the safest way to back up Snapchat Memories?

Request a My Data export from Snapchat and store the ZIP files on a computer, external drive or cloud folder, not only on your phone. Turn on "Save to Camera Roll" for future Snaps. Snapchat's own Terms recommend keeping a separate copy of anything you save to Memories.
